I had been looking for a product to help aid me in the removal of old wheel weight adhesive on these wheels I was deep cleaning. I was recommend a eraser wheel and decided to hop on the old Amazon.com and found the “best seller” cheap special compared to the more expensive 3M version. I picked up this bad boy for $12 and got it the next day.
Tools Used
- Cordless drill (fully charged)
- Eraser wheel from Amazon (link)
- Water source
- Wheel cleaner
Using the Eraser Wheel is Easy
- After you remove and deep clean your wheels off the vehicle, prop them up so you wont damage the face of the wheel and have ample room to work in the barrel of the wheel.
- Next take your favorite drill and put the eraser wheel into the chuck so its tight and began to make contact with the old adhesive in question. You may be temped to use a lubricant/water/APC/quick detailer but you don’t want to do this, because the friction it creates is actually what it uses to lift the old adhesive off the surface. You want to apply light-medium pressure while the wheel is rotation at maximum speed you feel is controllable.
I find that the top layer of adhesive comes off in a few seconds, but the bottom layer may take up to a few minutes to fully remove. A tip I found that was useful was attacking the adhesive from a few different angles, which made the process faster.
-
Keep on going to all the old adhesive is gone and move on to the next spot or step. After you remove all the old adhesive, you will be left with tons of rubber eraser shavings.
-
To get rid of all the shavings, take your water source and spray down the wheel. If you see any adhesive that you missed, just repeat the process.
- Once you’re satisfied, clean your wheels as you typically do and throw a layer of protectant (spray on-rinse off or whatever you like) to make sure your hard work stays clean for longer and easier to clean.
I experienced no marring or additional damage to the wheel or wheel surface. If you have a dark gloss surface like gloss black wheels, you may experience some marring. A simple polish would fix that.
