There are multiple types of drying towels. Leave your bath towels in the shower and use a dedicated drying towel to keep your paint safe from added scratches.
Types of Drying Towels
Waffle Weave
- The oldest of the bunch, cleans very instantly but has little capacity for moisture or dirt.
- Very good on glass and also good on unprotected (unwaxed or non-coated) paint.
Twisted Pile
- Instant dry, amazing drying power, best used by dragging it over the paint with zero pressure.
- Good on glass.
- Works best on sealed cars, very much less nice on an unsealed car.
- Might need some initial moisture to really start working.
- Highly likely to leave streaks when not properly controlled.
Twisted Pile/Plush Hybrid
- Combines the crazy drying power of the twisted pile with the safety of plush, so you can use very mild pressure with this and it also can take some very very mild residual dirt.
- Can also be preferred if using a drying aid.
- Watch out to get a multidirectional one as monodirectional ones generally are not all that nice to use.
- Will not have the same drying power as a full twisted pile but if you only do one car at a time still mighty fine.
- Works better than pure twisted pile on unsealed paint.
Waffle Weave/Plush Hybrid
- Delicate surface drying towel, very safe
- Improved streak free finish and drying power on paint over a pure plush but worse on glass.
- Very nice for unsealed cars or delicate areas and door jambs
- Good as a post drying towel to wipe away small spots you missed
Dry Blade/Old School Leather
- These work by pushing the water off the paint. The Leather needs to be pre wetted.
- Make sure your paint is super clean for the dry blade and wet enough so it has a film to glide on.
- Very helpful in hot climates to get a load of water off quickly.
- Wipe the blade for contamination often
Does GSM of a drying towel matter?
Yes, because the more GSM (Grams per Square meter) a towel has the more water it can usually take, so the weight of the towel directly correlates with how much water it can take in.
